Surprise of a Lifetime
A week before my 29th birthday Devon told me to pack a small bag because we were going away for the weekend. In true Devon style he wouldn’t tell me where we were going, only that I should pack something that would be comfortable for walking but would also make me feel stylish.
I had no idea what to pack and shortly before the weekend he handed me his laptop that was set up with questions for me to answer about our relationship. If I got the question right I would move on to the next question, if I got it wrong it went back to the beginning. When I got to the end there was a pixelated picture of Audrey Hepburn looking in the flagship Tiffany store in the movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s. He wasn’t expecting me to guess the movie right away but that is one of my favourite movie scenes! Confused, I asked him what this was all about. That is when he told me that on Friday we were flying to New York City for the weekend!
I was in shock. As a self proclaimed city girl, Manhattan had always been a dream destination. The bigger the city, the better.
Devon had the weekend planned down to the minute. The hotel was booked and first thing Saturday morning would be my own Breakfast at Tiffany’s moment. City touring, Central Park, dinner reservations and a broadway play. He really deserves a medal for the amount of planning that went into this.
That Friday we boarded a plane headed for my dream city. We took the subway from JFK to 5th and 55th and got to our hotel after a quick tour around.
In New York
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
I woke us up bright and early the next morning, because who can really sleep when they have Manhattan at their doorstep? We bought coffees and croissants and headed around the corner to the Flagship Tiffany store. They weren’t open yet so we walked to Grand Central Station and saw Peewee Herman shooting a new film. Just one of many New York moments!
We got the most amazing bagels at Ess-A-Bagel and then walked up 5th and back to Tiffany where Devon bought my birthday present. We then walked through Central Park and were mistaken for locals and were asked for directions. Woop!
We cabbed to the MoMA and saw some incredible art before heading to the library. We found an Irish bar to stop at to have a quick drink before heading to the Empire State Building.
Afterwards we went to dinner where we had an incredible view of the building we were just in. From there we went to Time Square and then to see The Phantom of the Opera. We were so tired at this point that we ended up going back to our hotel room after that. We got to our room and Devon asks “So, do you want to make it official?”. I’m totally confused at this point and then from his pocket he pulls out the most beautiful diamond ring. He had it with him all day waiting for the perfect moment.
Needless to say, BEST BIRTHDAY EVER.
The next morning we flew home. I know we’ll be back
